His eyes scan across it again, and again, as though it might update itself to something else if he keeps looking at it. His expression shows a flash of emotion - relief, concern - before closing down. His mouth is set in a line. His eyes grow more and more distant.
Finally, he turns away, holding the portrait. He sets it down on the dining room table. There are slight divots in the wood where his fingers had held the frame. He breathes once, twice. He turns back to Genesis.
He bears a small smile. Like the one he wears in the field. In front of the cameras.
Then he says a word that he has never said in the field, or in front of the cameras. That he possibly has not said anywhere.
